A SOCIETY AND A UNIVERSITY FOR ALL THE AGES: DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE GENERATIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE

Analysis of empirical experiences, which allow the definition of a conceptual frame and the paradigm of intergenerational relations for a society without ages.

HOW WE SEE, HOW THEY SEE US

We are social beings and as those, we need recognition, feeling us part of a society, commenting and others making comments about us. We have a psychological necessity of giving and being useful, as well as observing the results of our own actions.
If we want to know which image the others have from us, we have to ask them and listen carefully to the answers, which will be like a reflection of us in different mirrors. Analyzing these “reflections” we can prove that the image the others perceive is different from the one we have from us. The perceptions the others have, though we are not totally pleased with them, are a gift, because if we did not have this feedback, if nobody perceived us, it would be as if we did not exist and this would be much worse.

If you want to know which image you project about a person, ask him/her what s/he sees, accept the answer, think about it and, in case it has nothing to do with “your reality”, ask yourself what you are doing wrong.

It is proposed to initiate a dialogue between the generations at the Campus of the University of Alicante, an action which is situated within the activities of the Seniors' Observatory at the UPUA and which has as its objective to approach students and teachers towards different social realities of the University collective, as well as to their educational and integration needs. In short, this is a first step towards the Alliance of the Generations.
