Deal with the evaluation of the present reality of
the 21st century of University Programmes for Older Adults in Spain.
This will be done from a diachronic analysis of the programmes for
seniors in the decade of the 70s of the 20th century (Universities of
the 3rd age) and till the end of the century with the consolidation of
the offer of university programmes for older adults in the majority of
Spanish universities. A synchronic analysis will be carried out through
the results obtained in recent research works by the AEPUM on the
current situation of the University Programmes for Older Adults in the
Spanish context and its future challenges.

Develop a comparative analysis with Latin American programmes:

Provide a debate concerning the reach, objectives,
structure, evaluation systems and institutionalization, among other
defining aspects of the Universities for all Ages and Programmes for
Older Adults that are offered at University level.

Deal with the realities of Universities for Older
Adults in the economic and sociocultural context of the 21st century:
the value of the experience, the necessary intergenerationality and the
no-exclusion of the senior by means of lifelong learning.

Within the Latin American area, strengthen the Latin
American Network of Educational University Experiences with Older
Adults and the regulation framework for the cooperation with the AEPUM.

Promote the 5th Latin American Meeting on University Programmes for Older Adults which will take place in 2013.

            Frame of reference

In 2002, after the reports of the Assembly of the United Nations on
Ageing, the International Action Plan of Madrid asked for raising
awareness within the economic, social and political world concerning
the challenges put by the rising life expectancy. Beyond formal
recommendations, the United Nations stressed the importance to include
older adults within the continuous training plans, as well as within
the processes of active social participation and decision processes.

The Universities for Older Adults have been working on the
incorporation of older adults to an active citizenship and on the
promotion of lifelong learning against the technological exclusion and
for the sociocultural and working integration, the personal development
and the prevention of dependence. The EHEA reform stresses new forms
and recognition of higher education, in which this teaching is included
in Spain.

The national AEPUM network and another international FIMTE network, are
situated in the target of the 4TH LATIN AMERICAN CONGRESS OF
UNIVERSITIES FOR OLDER ADULTS, a congress which continues the
trajectory of former meeting (background: First meeting “The University
Programmes for Older Adults at the beginning of a century” held in
Sevilla, Spain 2000; “1st Latin American Congress on Educational
University Experiences for Older Adults”, held in Lima, Peru, in August
2005; “2nd Latin American Congress on Educational University
Experiences for Older Adults”, held in Paran – Entre Ros,
Argentina 2007; and “3rd Latin American Congress”, which is the last
one that was held in San Jos, Costa Rica in August 2009).

The 4th Latin American Congress on Educational University Experiences
with Older Adults, proposed in Spain 2011 will be multicultural and
interdisciplinary, with the incorporation of diverse perspectives of
Universities, institutions responsible for educational, social and
economic policies related to the topic, as well as researchers within
the field of education, gerontology, sociology of ageing, and of other
matters in the field of social science and humanities (law, economy,
ethnology, philosophy, psychology,…) who can contribute with research
works, results, and proposals regarding the issues that will be dealt
with in the Congress.
