The University of Alicante's Permanent University (UPUA) is a scientific, cultural and social development programme that has as its aim to promote science and culture, as well as intergenerational relationships, in order to improve older adults quality of life and encourage them to participate in community activities assuming a very dynamic social role.
<br/><br/>
The accelerated changes occurred in the last few decades have had a stronger impact on the ageing society, and particularly on socially and culturally underprivileged older adult groups. 
<br/><br/>
The Permanent University (UPUA) programme, which is not a professionalising one, strictly speaking, since it is addressed to a segment of people between 50 and 92 years of age the largest subsegment of which corresponds to the 60-75 age-group i.e. the retired, non-active population. However, the UA regards personal development and active citizenship as being suffi
ciently important to justify the promotion of this programme.
