In the present academic year, the UPUA has a total of 1,200 students above 50 years of age, of whom 350 are taking 11 subjects related to the Health and Quality of Life Education for Health area of knowledge. These reduced figures in comparison with other areas of knowledge and subjects have been considered as a rejection to those kinds of subjects related with illnesses. This is one of the themes that we would like to include in the new concept Education for Health. It has been proved that the number of students that choose these subjects has increased according the evolution of the students enrolled since 1999.

Education for Health (EFH) is regarded as one of the fields showing a higher level of innovation within the framework of the Educational Reform now in progress in Spain, and is acquiring more and more importance as a pedagogical area of work in formal official education, and in informal social (unofficial) education, like the University Programmes for Seniors (UPS), where the subjects imparted in this field are numerous and always oriented to the personal development and to an improved quality of life of senior citizens, who are the addressees of these programmes.

Education for Health (EFH) has changed considerably in its ideological and methodological approach as a consequence of the paradigmatic changes that have taken place in the field of health: from a concept of health as ?non-disease?, we are developing another, more global concept, in which health is seen as the dynamic ?globality? of physical, mental and social well-being.

The evolution from the negative concept of health toward a positive vision has led to an ideological movement, according to which actions must be focused on encouraging healthy lifestyles, as opposed to the preventive approach which had prevailed until recently. In parallel, a terminological change has taken place: from the traditional name of (Public) Health Education to the current Education for Health (EFH).

Thus, EFH, which has as its aim to improve people?s health, can be considered from two perspectives on which are focused healthcare and educational actions:

Preventive: enabling people to avoid health problems either through their own control of risk situations or preventing their possible consequences.
Health promotion: ensuring that the population can adopt healthy lifestyles.

As a result of this ideological revolution, the criteria underpinning the concept of EFH have evolved too.

Therefore, Education for Health in Spain is now understood as a process of training and awareness development on the part of individuals so that they can acquire the basic knowledge, attitudes and habits for the defence and promotion of individual and collective health. In other words, we seek to develop students awareness and prepare them so that, little by little, they can adopt as healthy a lifestyle as possible, as well as some positive health-related behaviours. Our training disciplines and activities at the Universidad Permanente have this orientation for 50+ people.

The ageing phenomenon in the Spanish society (35% of the population will be older than 50 in 2050) has encouraged the preferential need to educate this population segment in health habits meant to obtain quality of life among the senior population and ensuring, at the same time, states of greater autonomy and lesser dependence.
